In February 2026, members of our NYC TRAC showcased their latest research at the 30th Annual Conference of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease - North America Region in Philadelphia. The research highlighted ongoing efforts to address critical challenges in TB care and prevention and spanned across clinical, epidemiological, and global health domains.
NYC TRAC Early Investigators’ Presentations at 2026 NIAID ALL TRAC Annual Meeting

Our TRAC was well represented at the TRAC Annual Meeting, held February 23–24, 2026, at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The meeting provided a platform for early-stage investigators across the TRAC network to share cutting-edge research and foster collaboration in tuberculosis science.
Dr. Kayvan Zainabadi, Assistant Professor of Molecular Microbiology in Medicine at Weill Cornell, presented his work on the transcriptional regulation of the differentially detectable phenotype in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Center Assistant Professor Returns from Two Month Visit to India Setting Up New Lab to Evaluate his New Treatment Monitoring TB Diagnostic

Dr. Kayvan Zainabadi, Center Assistant Professor of Molecular Microbiology in Medicine, recently spent 2 months in Pune, India launching a new project to evaluate a new TB diagnostic he and Weill Cornell Medicine colleagues developed for predicting treatment outcomes in TB patients.
Global Health Leaders Convene at the UN General Assembly in NYC to Address the Intersection of Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases

Weill Cornell Medicine’s Center for Global Health, GHESKIO (Haiti), the Mérieux Foundation, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and New York University co-hosted an event on September 22nd coinciding with the UN General Assembly, focused on the intersection of infectious and non-communicable diseases. Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of PAHO, delivered the keynote address, and emphasized the urgent need for integrated health strategies to address both infectious agents and chronic conditions that increasingly affect the same populations.
Dr. Carl Nathan, NYC-TRAC Faculty, Receives David and Beatrix Hamburg Award'

We are proud to share that Dr. Carl F. Nathan, R.A. Rees Pritchett Professor of Microbiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been awarded the David and Beatrix Hamburg Award for Advances in Biomedical Research and Clinical Medicine by the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Jyoti Mathad, NYC-TRAC Faculty, Co-Leads WHO TB Consensus Effort on Including Pregnant and Lactating Women in TB Research

We are proud to share that Dr. Jyoti Mathad, a faculty member at our NYC-TRAC, has played a leading role in a new global initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) to address inequities in tuberculosis (TB) research for pregnant and lactating women. Over the past two years, Dr. Mathad has co-led the Therapeutics Working Group of the WHO consensus team, helping to develop critical recommendations that place pregnant and lactating women at the forefront of TB therapeutics research.

Dr. Sabine Ehrt Named Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine
June 13, 2025
Effective July 1, Dr. Sabine Ehrt— Basic Science Core Director of NYC TRAC—will become chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Ehrt plans to build on the Department’s strong TB program, recruit faculty in antimicrobial resistance and malaria, and foster collaborations with the Cornell Center for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and the College of Veterinary Medicine. She also aims to expand mentoring for junior scientists.
